16 September Celebrating the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

Ozone layer Preservation celebration

The Ozone layer is an important facet in the existence of life. The Ozonosphere protects our planet from the sun’s harmful rays. Therefore, reducing the occurrence of various human ailments. Furthermore, it protects our environment, ensuring we live in conducive surroundings. But it has not always been easy for the world to know the importance of this layer. That explains why countries came together in 1987 to sign the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. The protocol later led to the International Day’s birth for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. On this day, the world will be commemorating in about a week.

This year’s commemorations come when researchers have revealed a major hole in the Ozone layer treaty. The research co-authored by a researcher from the University of Sussex indicates that the treaty has deficiencies that threaten human health and the general climate if not addressed in time. In other news, researchers from India found that pollution has led to a low Ozonosphere over the Brahmaputra river valley. These findings suggest that the world has a long way to go to prevent stronger climate change associated with the Ozone.

Why we celebrate World Ozone Day?

The Montreal treaty signed on September 16, 1987, gives us every reason to celebrate this day. Firstly, the day when countries entered into an official commitment to reduce the use of harmful substances that destroy this layer. Secondly, a recent study indicates that the layer is recovering well since the signing of the treaty. It is widely known that the harmful rays of the sun are causative agents of skin cancer. Therefore, we have a reason to celebrate and enhance efforts towards protecting the ozone layer every year on September 16.

Popular methods of protecting the Ozone layer

There is a hole in the Ozone layer caused by changes in the ozone atmosphere and linked to human behaviour. Therefore, there are certain things we can do while commemorating the Ozone preservation day. Here are some pointers you can use as an individual:

  • Maintain your air conditioner to prevent the release of CFC into the air
  • Buy local goods and hence minimise the production of nitrous oxide
  • Use safe cleaning agents for the sake of the environment and human life
  • Avoid the use of Ozone-depleting gases
  • If possible, use public transport and hence reduce the production of nitrous oxide

Celecom is taking this opportunity to thank the researchers who devote their time to learn better ways of protecting the environment. We are also reminding the world leaders and you that that full recovery of the Ozonosphere is possible. This can happen if the necessary measures are put in place. Now is your time to spread the word and help protect the Ozonosphere. Share this article. Remind people of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozonosphere in 2020 wherever you are
